Hope Against Hope: Addiction, Treatment, and Recovery is my most recent book. It’s co-authored with Michael Lochran, who is the Clinical Director of Renascent Addictions Treatment Centre in Toronto. Now a Registered Psychotherapist, Michael is in long-term recovery from methamphetamine addiction.

As addiction comes out of the shadows and more and more families and friends are affected by the devastating opioid epidemic, we recognized a need for families and loved ones to access unbiased, cutting-edge information on addiction and research on best-practices in clinical treatment. We consider addiction to be a biopsychosocial phenomenon, and approach both, the development and treatment of addictive disorders, through each of these lenses. Unlike other books presenting only research-based information, we also recognized the importance of first-hand experience. In addition to Michael’s story, six other individuals with first-person experience in addiction and recovery contributed their stories to help the reader understand the lived experience of addiction more fully.

As a college professor, it is a true honour to have authored books that introduce students to the field of psychology. My work on these introductory textbooks deepened my understanding across all areas of this exciting field.
